Temperatures are moderating a bit after a blistering July. That’s a sure sign that fall is on the way, along with a new wave of fashion trends to embrace the new season. Checking the trends, we’ll see a continuation of some of summer’s general tendencies with a heavy dose of time travel. If you are thinking Back to the Future you’d be in the right decade. Here’s a look at what’s on the runway and what you’ll see featured on our creaking floors.

First, let’s take a look at this season’s Pantone colors. Fall’s colors express individuality, ingenuity, and creativity. While many of the colors in this expressive fall palette echo the kaleidoscope of colors found in the turning of the leaves, there are a few that break with tradition like Limelight and Crocus Petal, which would be more traditionally found in a spring palette. The classic colors for fall and winter are a little more reserved with blue, gray, and tans.

Trends for men will include bolder colors and patterns—including plaids. Most every photo you see showcases pin rolled pants. This can easily be a classic or casual expression. Footwear trends continue last year’s breakout of boots from Blundstone (the Super 550 Series) and the Madson from Sorel*. For a more casual look, try the Chuck-Taylor-ish sneakers from Astral (TR-1 Junction) and OluKai (Nohea Moku).

For the ladies, you’ll see some 1980-ish silhouettes featuring exaggerated shoulders and bold color combinations. Stripes—all kinds of stripes: horizontal, vertical, big, small, combinations—they are all in for fall. Keep an eye out for flounces; these could be as understated as a bell on sleeves of a dress or as pronounced as ruffles stacked on top of each other on a dress.

Patterns and lots of color are mainstays again. Some patterns will reflect a craftier look, perhaps paying homage to the creativity of quilting bees of yore, while others may be more classic in nature (think houndstooth or plaids). Bold printed or applique patterns are also trending for fall, particularly on dresses.

Another trend continuing from the summer is denim—“real” denim, chambray shirts, and denim prints are continuing to grow in popularity. From the sweater jean jacket from PBJ to the classic distressed Original Overalls from Levi’s, no matter what kind of denim you are wearing, you’ll be in.

Women’s footwear continues to focus on boots, especially mid-calf and tall styles. This year’s offering from Sorel* has a number of fashionable selections, including styles that feature another trend—fleece.

Of course, you’ll want to accessorize your ensemble. Pop up the color or tone it down a bit with a scarf. And jewelry trends are headed away from matchy-matchy to the asymmetrical (another good reason to save your mismatched earrings).
