Ah, the holidays. Perhaps a better reference would be Food-a-Paloosa! Think about it. Beginning at Thanksgiving and running through New Year’s Day (or Old Christmas on January 6 if you’re so inclined), can you name one gathering that does not have a food component? Office lunches, holiday open houses, neighborhood gatherings, Secret Santa get-togethers, Christmas parties... The list can be staggering. And that’s OK. Nothing brings a group together better than a good meal. So, let us prepare to lay a beautiful table and fill it with tasty fare from the best cooks around. ...read more

The Holiday Season brings people together through shared traditions. We watch children’s faces light up with joy and wonder as they wait in line with Mom and Dad to share their wish lists with Santa Claus. We gather with our neighbors along city sidewalks for festive parades and in town squares for Christmas tree lightings. We attend services, plays, pageants, concerts, choir performances, and countless other holiday-themed events, too, all to keep the spirit of the season alive in our hearts and in our communities from year to year. ...read more

Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

The lucky few who have seen the Earth from a different perspective – astronauts - all echo the same viewpoint upon their return. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut and the first human to go to space, commented, “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it.”

We’ve all said the phrase, “If these walls could talk, what stories they would tell.” That could be said about many places and perhaps the walls themselves – think about Russia’s famous Amber Room if it’s ever found. Much closer to home, we started wondering about the iconic centerpiece of the Front Room at the Original Mast General Store. Just what is the story of the pot-bellied stove? ...read more

Summer is slowly giving way to fall, and as the days grow shorter and the weather begins to change, my family enjoys creating homemade decorations to welcome the new season. Each year, we pull out our daughters’ fall-themed creations to decorate the house. The girls love seeing what they’ve made in years past and we all look forward to our tradition of adding a few new decorations to our collection. Here are a few ideas to get you started with your own autumn crafting tradition: ...read more

I always like to visit the Great Smoky Mountain National Park because it is the most bio-diverse park in the NPS. With everything from huge, exposed balds and ridge lines to dark and wet coves, the Smokies have it all. They have just over 800 miles of trails that can give you whatever you want to see while in the woods. I have been trying to knock out every trail in the Park since I was in college, and I am up to just over 600 miles complete…and don’t want it to end! For that reason, every trip to the Smokies is my favorite trip. ...read more

Shenandoah National Park is a family favorite and we travel there often. My husband, Eric, and I love it so much that we got married in the park - right off Skyline Drive at Timber Hollow Outlook. As you see in the photos, I got married in a gray wool suit. I am not very “girly” and it was late November. ...read more
