*The winter hours for each location may vary slightly and usually start in mid-January.

Do you have items that are made in the USA?
At the Mast General Store, our buying team sources goods first locally, then regionally, then nationally and internationally. We are always looking for opportunities to support artisans, craftsmen, and manufacturers making their goods in the United States.

That being said, we depend upon the product information that our vendors and manufacturers provide to us in order to designate the items as Made in the USA. We require that our partners notify us if their manufacturing changes in a way that would affect their products' Made in the USA status.

If you learn that a "Made in the USA" product designation is questionable, please contact us and let us know.

Can I purchase a gift certificate to give as a gift?
Yes, it's just like giving someone the whole store - so to speak. We have several designs to choose from that are sure to speak to the personality of the lucky recipient. You'll find the available selections HERE. There's also an option if you let a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion sneak up on you - a digital gift card, which can be e-mailed directly to someone's inbox. Here's that LINK.

What kind of jellies and preserves do you carry, and can I order them?
We do have a dizzying array of jellies, preserves, and butters. You're certain to find something to tickle your tastebuds. There are several flavors that are only available seasonally and others that rotate in and out. Some will be available during the holiday season in convenient gift boxes. I loved your rocking chairs, can I have one sent to my home?
Our rocking chairs are all Made in the USA by Troutman or the Amish in Ohio and Pennsylvania. You may purchase one online and have it sent to one of our store locations for pickup for free.

We do accept phone orders for rocking chairs - the folks in Customer Service will be happy to explain the procedure for getting them from us to you. Because of their size, rockers cannot be shipped via UPS; they must be delivered by a "common carrier," like Estes, Yellow, or Fredrickson.

I've visited your store in Waynesville, are all of your stores the same?
Well, yes and no. We try to have several of the same items and product lines at each of our stores, but each location has its own personality and also features items made right in their own backyards.

We try to share the interesting stories of our stores and communities in each location. Since each location is in a re-used building, you'll find differences in features, displays, and layout. Many of our guests make it a goal to visit all of them. You can learn more about the history of our buildings by clicking on over to the HISTORY part of the website and then on each individual community. Here's a listing of our locations, their building date, and when they joined the "Mast Store Family."

Valle Crucis - Original Store 1883 (re-opened in 1980) and the Mast Store Annex 1909 (1982)
Boone - ca. 1923 and 1988
Waynesville - ca. 1935 and 1991
Hendersonville - ca. 1905 and 1995
Asheville - ca. 1940s and 1999
Greenville - ca. 1898 and 2003
Knoxville - 1898 and 2006
Columbia - ca. 1870s and 2011
Winston-Salem - 1928 and 2015
Roanoke - 1915 and 2020

The Original Store (1883) is still much the same as when it was built. It and the Annex in Valle Crucis (1909) have just about every square inch of floor and shelf space merchandised in some way. In these two stores, shopping is definitely an adventure.

Does the Mast Family still own the Mast Store?
Yes and no. First, the no part. The Mast General Store became an employee-owned business (ESOP) in 1995, so each employee who meets certain criteria owns a little bit of the store, which in a way kinda makes us a part of the Mast family. Now, for the yes part. Allen Mast, W. W. Mast's great-grandson, is one of the managers at the Original Store in Valle Crucis. He is a part of the ESOP program. So, yes, it is, in a manner of speaking, still owned by the Mast Family.

Do you still carry coffins and caskets?
The Mast Store in Valle Crucis was once touted as "the store that had everything." One of Mr. Mast's original ads, which appeared in the 1923 edition of The Rhododendron, the Appalachian State University yearbook, proclaimed "Goods for the living, Coffins and caskets for the dead." We now have one example of a coffin on display in the upstairs part of the Original Store in Valle Crucis. We regret that we don't offer coffins and caskets any longer, but we thought those goods might ought to be left to "specialists."

I remember this thing that my grandmother had and it did all of these wonderful things, do you have one in stock?
A walk through the Mast Store's Mercantile Department certainly can conjure up lots of memories, and we get questions like this often. If you can describe what you are remembering, we'll check our stock to see if we have it. If we don't, we may be able to special order it for you or direct you to another store that may have the product. Send us an email with your detailed description.
