I participated in the Bikecentennial ‘76.  This landmark event consisted of a series of bicycle tours on the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail across the United States in the summer of 1976 in commemoration of the bicentennial of America's Declaration of Independence. Best of all, I was able to enjoy several national parks from the comfort of my bicycle.

The TransAmerica Bicycle Trail begins in coastal Oregon and ends in coastal Virginia. About 4,000 riders participated, representing all 50 states and many foreign countries. Just over 2,000 bicyclists rode the entire length of the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail. I’m proud to have been a part of this event. It’s considered to be the catalyst for bicycle touring in the United States. This incredible tour provided a slow-moving view of America and its natural wonders.

Using back roads while traveling through the heart of America, we were welcomed into several national parks. Most memorable were the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. The unrestricted view from the seats of our eco-friendly transportation were absolutely phenomenal.

The Park Service also welcomed us as we cycled and camped. One of many memories of that trip was spotting mountain goats, bear, elk, and moose. Best of all, the wild animals were seemingly unafraid of us on our bicycles.

The National Park system is a treasure for all of us. We may not all be able to visit every one, but it sure is comforting to know they are protected and add incredible value to our American heritage.
