A mysterious creature roams the hills of Appalachia. It carries its bulky, slouching figure upright yet travels with catlike agility under the cover of night so that it goes undetected and unseen – by most people, at least. Though it’s said to stand much taller than an adult human with hair or fur covering its body from head to toe, the creature is best known for one distinctive feature evidenced only by the tracks it leaves on the ground… An oversized foot. ...read more

To celebrate, Mast Store is giving everyone who visits that day a free bag of its world-famous, freshly popped popcorn. ...read more

What a difference a few decades make! The images of New York City were taken in 1970 (Bernard Gotfryd, Library of Congress) and in 2018 by Afif Ramdhasuma (from pexels.com). Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22 since it was established through grassroots efforts in 1970. It was a response to increasing concerns caused by smog (intense air pollution caused mainly by exhaust fumes), Great Lakes at risk of dying from pesticide runoff and waste dumping, and rivers that caught on fire (the Cuyahoga River in Ohio famously caught fire in June of 1969). It was also the year when monumental legislation was enacted to address all kinds of environmental concerns. ...read more

Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

The lucky few who have seen the Earth from a different perspective – astronauts - all echo the same viewpoint upon their return. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut and the first human to go to space, commented, “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it.”

My favorite National Park is the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s wonderful to be able to experience it by car for as little or as long as you'd like. You can take a short drive to refresh your mind when you've got just an hour, or you could spend entire weeks driving and stopping at all the overlooks and park attractions. ...read more

“Whoa, what is that?” I screamed with excitement. “It’s an elk,” my friend Cathy responded. I had never seen such a creature. It was amazing, and what made it even more amazing was the beautiful alpine tundra on which the elk and its counterparts were standing. We had made it…Rocky Mountain National Park. This place was not like anything I had ever seen or experienced before. ...read more

In late September 2013, I visited the Outer Banks of North Carolina. One of the highlights of the trip was a stop at Bodie Lighthouse on the Oregon Inlet in Nags Head, NC. It had recently undergone major renovations that finished at the end of March 2013. Luckily for me, it was now open for the public to explore the interior of the lighthouse! ...read more
