What is it about Christmas that stirs our memories? Certainly, memories overflow when we gather with those we love, especially as we remember those who are no longer with us. Perhaps the annual rituals of the season, like venturing to the mountains to choose a live Christmas tree or searching through a shoebox filled with heirloom ornaments that have adorned your family’s trees for generations, conjure tales from long ago. It’s likely, too, that our holiday memories include exceptional moments, like taking your child to visit Santa for the first time or watching snowflakes paint a picturesque scene on a rare, white Christmas. ...read more

In these modern times, there aren’t as many reasons to hang our stockings “by the chimney with care.” That is until Christmastime arrives, and then we all want the biggest, grandest stocking we can find to be filled by Santa on Christmas Eve. How did that even become a thing? And what are some ideas for stocking stuffers? We’re glad you asked. ...read more

In the days after September 27, 2024, highway information signs were emblazoned with a message... Do Not Travel in Western North Carolina. That sounds ominous, but its message was not overstated. Because of the tireless work by state and federal employees, local folks, and thousands and thousands of volunteers, the mountains are OPEN – including two lanes of Interstate 40 – and we invite you to vacation... And volunteer! ...read more

Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

Boone
As the birthplace of our first Mast General Store outside of Valle Crucis, we've had a love affair with Boone, North Carolina for centuries. As the home of Appalachian State University (ASU), folks are drawn to this busy college town for more reasons than an exceptional education and exciting athletic events. The surrounding area is one of the country's best destinations for outdoor adventures. Walk across the Mile High Swinging Bridge or scale Linville Peak, the highest peak in the Blue Ridge at Grandfather Mountain. Grab your bike and head to Pisgah National Forest, featuring over 200 miles of exciting trails.
“The Watauga County Farmers Market is the place to see and be seen every Saturday morning from May through October”, says Callie, a graduate student at ASU. Grab a vine ripe tomato, a head of butter crunch lettuce, apple smoked bacon, and seven grain bread – all from local farms – and you have the makings for the perfect BLT to fuel up your hiking or kayaking trip at Price Lake.
In town, don’t miss a delicious breakfast on the outdoor patio at Melanie’s Food Fantasy, check out the work of local artisans at Art Walk or Hands Gallery, or throw the frisbee and enjoy a picnic along the beautiful Boone Greenway.
You also won’t want to miss the world class exhibitions at Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, go for a stroll along King Street during the First Friday celebrations, and enjoy free bluegrass, Americana, and jazz concerts on the front lawn of the Jones House Community Center.
Named for the legendary explorer, Daniel Boone, Boone, North Carolina retains the same pioneer spirit. Skiing in the winter, hiking in the summer, and enjoying a diverse cultural scene downtown, this southern mountain town is an easy pick for Outdoor Magazine’s Best Town Ever. The vote, click HERE.
