"Once upon a time not so long ago, nine white mice lived in a cage in Jimmy Ryan's bedroom. All the mice had clean shiny fur, nicely shaped ears, and fine slender tails. Sweet smelling cedar shavings covered their cage floor, and their water and food were always fresh. They had everything they needed. But . . . they wanted more! Adventure! Freedom! Sparkle!"
While on a scavenger hunt to find the various Main Street locales of the famed nine mice sculptures of Greenville, SC, author Linda Kelly's granddaughter suggested she write a book about them. So, she did! She consulted with Jim Ryan, the creator of the original city project, and Zan Wells, the designer and sculptor of the beloved bronze rodents. They all sat around Kelly's kitchen table, read the story, and named each mouse— Maggie, Marvin, Mifflin, Miles, Marvin, Jr., Marcley, Melissa, Mitch, and teeny tiny Millie. Wells also agreed to create the illustrations for the book which was icing on the cake. The result is a charming story for all ages about a thrill-seeking family that goes on exciting escapades while tucked away in their owner, Jimmy's pockets and atop his red cowboy hat. It focuses on adventure, family relationships, and personal growth as the mice discover where each one belongs in the world.
