What a difference a few decades make! The images of New York City were taken in 1970 (Bernard Gotfryd, Library of Congress) and in 2018 by Afif Ramdhasuma (from pexels.com). Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22 since it was established through grassroots efforts in 1970. It was a response to increasing concerns caused by smog (intense air pollution caused mainly by exhaust fumes), Great Lakes at risk of dying from pesticide runoff and waste dumping, and rivers that caught on fire (the Cuyahoga River in Ohio famously caught fire in June of 1969). It was also the year when monumental legislation was enacted to address all kinds of environmental concerns. ...read more

What is a library? It’s a big building with lots of books in it. But wait, it’s so much more. The library is a gateway to your wildest dreams, a place to learn, a place to imagine, a place to make friends. Today’s libraries are repositories of books, but they also are places to get help to learn to read or improve your reading, to improve your math skills, to listen to a performance by a string quartet, to watch a movie, to refine your crafting skills, and to gather with fellow writers. Yes, libraries are SO much more. ...read more

Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

The lucky few who have seen the Earth from a different perspective – astronauts - all echo the same viewpoint upon their return. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut and the first human to go to space, commented, “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it.”

It’s hard to believe that it’s time to make the closet changeover from summer to fall. If you choose carefully among last year’s trending styles, you can update your look by adding a few key items from this year’s emerging course. Let’s get started.
This year’s 12 colors for fall chosen by the color experts at Pantone© include a few holdover swatches similar to last year’s palette (like Crème de Peche and Peach Pink), but overall, the colors for fall are strong, vibrant, and liberating. Everyone will certainly be able to create their own looks by combining the 12 seasonal colors with the fall/winter classic tones that are just a bit more reserved and can easily be used as grounding pieces.
Looking way back to last year, denim is still in. Check jeans jackets for men and women, cropped, rolled, or cuffed jeans with a higher rise for women, with skinny jeans still being a thing to wear with boots and booties. The cuffed or rolled jeans look is also trending for men.
Tops in accessories for fall/winter 2019 include the neck scarf for both men and women. It’s a great way to provide a break between patterns, add a pop of color, or be practical and in style by adding a little insulation between your coat and your hat. For ladies, cozy bags are still on the scene. Face it, your credit cards, checkbook, and lipstick need to be kept warm on those cool, crisp mornings, too. Check out the offerings from KAVU, which include the ever-popular Rope Sling in a warm-and-fuzzy fleece and a crossbody bag for a more formal look.
Women’s silhouettes for fall include flashbacks to the decades of the 60s and 70s. Plaids are in! Big, bold, and colorful. Wear them in tops, bottoms, and coats. Suede is also an in fabric for the fall. Try it in a cool layered skirt (another trend) from Aryeh. The fabric is soft with just the right amount of stretch and made from polyester. Next up from the Wayback Machine are capes. These definitely provide a more tidy look for formal affairs or dates, and are very practical for warmth. Here’s a poly/wool blend from Paparazzi. For a more casual, everyday look, try the marled cape from Lulu-B.
Women’s footwear for fall includes “biker-look” boots, like the Roam Peak Polar from Merrell, and pull-ons like the high-top 1448 from Blundstone. Alpine sneakers are also trending in casual looks – like this option from Hoka One One.
OK, guys, let’s take a more focused look at your “look.” Mast Store has known this for years, and now we’re on the cutting edge of fashion. Flannel is awesome, and it’s also on-trend for this fall. Tuck it in or wear it untucked, it really doesn’t matter as long as it’s flannel. The Cornell Woods Flannel from Columbia is tops on our list because, wait for it, it’s flannel and it features several of the fall’s best colors. It’s also available in tall sizes. Graphic tees are also trending, especially if they are vintage. We’ll call out this one in our stock – the Windmill Tee – since it commemorates the world’s largest windmill, which used to sit atop Howard Knob overlooking Boone.
The top picks in footwear for men include the Madson Chukka from Sorel. Its styling makes it easy to wear for casual or dressy occasions. The alpine sneaker look is always prevalent on the men’s side of the coin, so here’s an option there – the Burnt Rock Travel Suede from Merrell.
Stop in for even more trending styles of the season.
