Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

The lucky few who have seen the Earth from a different perspective – astronauts - all echo the same viewpoint upon their return. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut and the first human to go to space, commented, “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it.”

Kimberly Masters is not only a world traveler, but a woman who creatively harnesses the tantalizing scents of her journeys in one unusual package – soap!
Masters has pedaled her bike across the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii) as well as cycled around the stunning landscapes of Thailand, Costa Rica, and the Himalayas of Nepal. It’s Kimberly’s unique gift for gathering the scents of her travels into a very special bar of soap that’s made her company, Essential Journeys (makers of Soap by the Slice), a sweet smelling success!
Soaps with delicious scents like Lavender Morning, Thai Lemongrass, Mango Papaya Sunset, and Southern Magnolia are all handcrafted in Kimberly’s home studio nestled in the stunning mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. The benefit of handmade soap is that it’s great for all skin types, especially those of us with sensitive skin. Essential Journeys Soap by the Slice is made with hypoallergenic ingredients that nourish and moisturize the skin like Aloe Vera and vitamin E. The addition of glycerin maintains the body’s moisture balance by drawing water to the outer layer of your skin, leaving it feeling soft and supple.
Each bar of Essential Journeys soap is a slice of art featuring different colors, shapes and designs that further enhance your bathing experience. Your plain old bar of soap just won’t do after you’ve pampered yourself with a cheerfully designed bar of Essential Journeys handmade soap.
Essential Journeys Soap by the Slice, lotion, and liquid soap are available at the Mast General Store in Asheville, Waynesville, and Hendersonville, as well as Rivercross in Valle Crucis.
