A couple of weeks ago, many chambers of commerce and tourism groups held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to signify that Western North Carolina is open and awaiting your visit. Valle Crucis is open, too, and welcomes a new restaurant and a revamped trail to its offerings. We hope you’ll visit soon. ...read more

This week we’re joining Mr. Peabody and stepping into the Wayback Machine. As he adjusts the dials to get us to Valle Crucis in late 1979 and early 1980, we’ll share a few historic markers to help paint a clearer picture. The prime lending rate was 14.5% with the interest rate being 11.3% (compare that to now – the interest rate is 2.7%). The country was in the midst of an energy crisis caused by the Iranian Revolution, which led to a drop in oil production and long lines at gas stations. Those are some of the external conditions a young family was facing when they made the decision to leave Florida and re-open an old general store. ...read more

In the days after September 27, 2024, highway information signs were emblazoned with a message... Do Not Travel in Western North Carolina. That sounds ominous, but its message was not overstated. Because of the tireless work by state and federal employees, local folks, and thousands and thousands of volunteers, the mountains are OPEN – including two lanes of Interstate 40 – and we invite you to vacation... And volunteer! ...read more

Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

Week 7 is the last reporting week for this year's Fall Foliage Primer. As we close the books on the fall color season, Knoxville is just now hitting its peak, as is Greenville. They will enjoy color for a little while longer. Asheville, Waynesville, and Hendersonville are a little past their high color line. There are some pockets of color that will sneak up on you. The Valle Crucis and Boone area are at the beginning of stick season, but that isn't stopping some of the oaks from showing off their true colors. Check the report for some ideas on scenic drives and fun events. Remember, November 11 is Veterans Day. ...read more

Week 5 of the Fall Foliage Primer is seeing more color in all locations. Yep, hard to believe! Asheville, Waynesville, and Hendersonville are stretching to reach peak color in the near term. The Boone and Valle Crucis areas have some substantial leaf loss, but reds, oranges, and yellows are still popping up and are pretty prominent (particularly in the lower elevations). Greenville and Knoxville are still waiting for lots of color, but it is appearing slowly. All areas have lots of fun events in store including ghost walks, pumpkin carving, and beautiful hikes. ...read more

Week two of the Fall Foliage Primer is here, but a lot more color is not. Higher elevations around Graveyard Fields or Grandfather Mountain have more color, but in general we are seeing some reds and yellows hanging around with the getting-ready-to-get-started greens. While the leaves an event in themselves, there are many more happenings in our communities that our reporters hope to help you discover. ...read more
