November 4, 2009
by Ethel Foss

I hope you are having a good week! It has been glorious with the bright blue skies and moderate temperatures this week. Did you see the space station Monday evening? Callie and I sat out on the porch and watched the full moon rise but missed seeing the space station. The moon was so bright we did not even need to turn on the night lights!

We got a nice note from our friend Rick in Florida. He said they were having record breaking high temperatures and he was wishing to be here in the cool High Country!

According to Ray’s website, it looks pretty chilly mid week with maybe even a flurry or two Thursday evening. But the best weather news forecast is for the ASU game Saturday! The high is to be 60 degrees and mostly clear. Finally, Callie and I will get to go to a football game and not sit in the rain. Hooray! We hope it will be another win for our Mountaineers!

Remember it is time for the Boone Sunrise Rotary’s fruit sale. For several years now, the Rotary Club takes orders for Florida Indian River citrus as a fundraiser. Callie and I have enjoyed the grapefruit and the tangelos in past years but I think we will try the navel oranges this year. You can make your order until November 15 and then you pick up your fruit December 10 to the 13th. Call Ken Cone at 828.773.1373 for more details on how to order.

Can you believe it is November? I know we always talk about how time is flying by but my goodness it just shocks me. I must admit too that I am not so thrilled with the end of daylight savings time. It does force me indoors earlier but I enjoy puttering around outdoors as long as I can. I know it won’t be too long before the cold temperatures will be keeping us inside. Time to stock up on some great books and pick up the knitting needles, I guess.

We were sad to hear about Mary Wood’s chocolate lab, Charlie. He passed away early Friday morning. You may remember seeing Charlie at the Original Store many mornings with Mary. He was a great dog and I know Mary will miss him. It is so hard to lose a pet. When one of my dogs died a friend shared The Rainbow Bridge Story with me. I will share it now with you all.

The Rainbow Bridge Story
Author unknown

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had been left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

Their happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

Callie will take over the writing next week for the rest of the month. I am sure she will share her famous Thanksgiving turkey recipe with you in a few weeks!

Happy birthday wishes this week to Tom Eshelman November 1, Sarah Donovan November 5, and Savannah Copeland turns 13 on November 9. Happy anniversary to David and Roberta Yates November 5. I hope all of your celebrations are happy ones!
