What a difference a few decades make! The images of New York City were taken in 1970 (Bernard Gotfryd, Library of Congress) and in 2018 by Afif Ramdhasuma (from pexels.com). Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22 since it was established through grassroots efforts in 1970. It was a response to increasing concerns caused by smog (intense air pollution caused mainly by exhaust fumes), Great Lakes at risk of dying from pesticide runoff and waste dumping, and rivers that caught on fire (the Cuyahoga River in Ohio famously caught fire in June of 1969). It was also the year when monumental legislation was enacted to address all kinds of environmental concerns. ...read more

What is a library? It’s a big building with lots of books in it. But wait, it’s so much more. The library is a gateway to your wildest dreams, a place to learn, a place to imagine, a place to make friends. Today’s libraries are repositories of books, but they also are places to get help to learn to read or improve your reading, to improve your math skills, to listen to a performance by a string quartet, to watch a movie, to refine your crafting skills, and to gather with fellow writers. Yes, libraries are SO much more. ...read more

Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

The lucky few who have seen the Earth from a different perspective – astronauts - all echo the same viewpoint upon their return. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut and the first human to go to space, commented, “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it.”

We’re so excited about the upcoming opening of our newest “old” location that we want to share one of our “Mast Favorites” that’s born and bred in Winston-Salem, NC. Fulton & Roark began with a series of solid colognes designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday life. F&R crafts high-quality grooming products specifically built for the way men operate. They believe superior products should make a man’s process of getting ready less complicated and more enjoyable.
What’s the difference between solid cologne and liquid cologne? Great question. Think concentrated, wax-based fragrance, rather than a liquid cologne. This means the product is super travel friendly and convenient to keep on hand - in your pocket, in a gym bag, you get the idea - without having to worry about it spilling or breaking.
From Fulton & Roark:
“For us, quality ingredients are only half the story; if it’s not enjoyable, easy-to-use, and truly beneficial, we don’t believe it’s worth having. Our products are designed around the details that shape the lives of men; from the dimensions of the pockets in a pair of trousers, to the requirements of a global traveler, and even to the real estate around a bathroom sink.”
The solid cologne is made with premium quality essential oils and an exceptional wax blend containing microcrystalline wax and coconut oil. Fulton & Roark Solid Colognes are available in three distinctive scents, all named for islands in the southeastern United States. Tybee is a brisk white musk accented with rosewood and cedar. Shackleford’s fragrance is a blend of warm amber and sandalwood. Hatteras smells fresh, green and lightly spiced. Best yet, they’re made in the USA.
"This cologne provides maximum scent with minimum application, doesn't burn after shaving, and I feel it intensifies throughout the day (apply on neck and wrists). My wife loves it, and so do I. You get what you pay for and the quality of this cologne is top notch," raves a Fulton & Roark wearer.
And who is Fulton & Roark named after? Not the owners? Why, they’re handsome canines, of course [pictured to the left.] All the more reason to love this line!
