Blue Sky and SunI hope you are having a great week. The past two weekends were beautiful- it is hard to beat sunshine and Carolina blue skies. The Valle Crucis park was busy as folks were enjoying getting out of the house into the fresh air. I even saw several cyclists out so be careful on the road ways since we are not so used to seeing them this time of year.

I heard from one of the neighbors that Blood Sweat and Gears is totally sold out. You remember this bicycling event that is a fundraiser for disaster services for the Watauga Chapter of the American Red Cross held the third Saturday in June in Valle Crucis. This year’s bike ride will be June 25 with packet pickup June 24. We will share more details as we know them.

Callie and I watched the Super Bowl last night and for once, we were cheering for the same team. Double cheering for Green Bay must have helped them to the win! We enjoy the football game and the commercials. I would ask you to send along your favorite commercial but our email account is acting up. I will let you know when it is back in service. Of course, you can always communicate with Callie and I the old fashioned way of letter writing via the postal service!

Congratulations to Ingrid Forsyth who swims for Watauga High School. She is part of the relay team that qualified for the state meet this weekend in Cary. Good luck to Ingrid, Darby, Hailey, and Doria.

Callie and I have gone to a few of the ASU men’s and women’s basketball games lately and have really enjoyed ourselves. It is nice to get out and see folks during the winter and LC is kind enough to take us. I don’t love basketball as much as Callie but I do like to get out of the house when I can!

We watched the gasoline prices go up over the weekend here in Boone. I think this is the first time in a while that gas has been cheaper here at home than off the mountain. Someone said they saw $3.15 near Asheville last week and we were at the $2.98 range. Makes me wonder how some folks are able to get all the bills paid when everything gets so expensive.

Tom Payne down at the store has 6 beans left in his jar for snow as of Monday, February 7, 2011. Looks like we may be getting some snow this week! I know the schools would like to stay in for an entire week but it doesn’t look so promising for this week.

We have been eating a lot of soup this winter. One of my favorites is made with chicken (the rotisserie ones from the deli make this soup a snap), fresh kale, rice, white beans, tomatoes, diced purple onion, and spices. We make a big pot of soup and eat it for several days with cornbread. Sure takes the chill of the colder winter days!

Thank you to the nice volunteer who picked up trash along Hwy 194 this weekend. Now that the snow is melting, the trash becomes so evident.

I have many birthdays to catch up on so I will start with Seth Powell January 19, Fay Binning January 20, Hattie Yates January 24, Garth Rominger January 31, Babette McAuliffe February 1, Fred Martin February 1, Linda Pendolino February 5, and Annette Eggers February 6.
