Valle Crucis SnowmanWe hope that everyone is safe and staying at home on these days of slick and icy conditions. As I am writing this column, we have talked with several folks that have had “an adventure” on their way to work, to town, and to see friends. It’s these days that we are so glad that we can just stay at home, but we are thankful to all those who work so hard to keep our roadways as safe as possible. Be sure to tell the nice folks at the Department of Transportation and the State Troopers, Sheriff’s Department, and Police Officers how much you appreciate them.

With Christmas and New Year’s coming up, I’m going to take a little break next week and Ethel will take over reporting in January. We are busy getting our last minute Christmas items taken care of. Our shopping lists are almost done…just a few little this-and-thats to finish it up. Our goal this year was to find just the perfect gift for everyone on our list, but it has to be something that they really need.

The list was completed with lots of baskets filled with favorite foods or supplies for a favorite hobby – things that really add enjoyment to our lives. Of course there’s got to be a little fun. Don’t tell LC, but we know how much he loves pigs. He’s all the time stopping down at the ASU Sustainable Farm to visit with the little pigs there. When we stopped by the Mast Store Annex, Bob told us that he had something just perfect for LC. He showed us a pink pig that looks like a seat cushion…. I can’t wait until LC puts it in his favorite chair and has a seat. It should be good for a giggle or two….since it’s a whoopee cushion!

I know, juvenile humor at it’s best, but like I said, there has to be a little fun. Some of our favorite gifts that we’ve gotten from people in the past are “gift cards.” These are not your typical gift cards, they are cards that say “Call us in the spring, and we’ll come out and get your flowerbeds ready for planting.” Those are always the best because something you need to happen gets done and you have a little visit, too.

Thank you to Dawn Jensen who sent in a picture of a snowman built by her daughters Tory and Erin and some of their friends. The picture has a note in it, but I can’t seem to make out what it says (Ethel says that’s a sign that I need to get my eyes checked again). We’ll post it online so others can see it, too. There are many special church services both on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day here in Valle Crucis. We hope that you enjoy your celebration with friends and family.

To all who correspond with us regularly and who read our column on a weekly basis, we wish for you and your family a wonderful Christmas and the best of new years in 2011.

Happy Birthday to Denise Bentley on December 24, to Deana Coleman on December 28, to Justin Martin and Alice Vines on December 29, to Pat LeVarge, Dave Donovan, Wendell Seaver, and Jillian Yates on December 30 and to Brooks Forsyth on December 31. My best wishes to all of you for fine celebrations and lots of fun!

Here’s a great quote about New Year’s. An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. ?Bill Vaughn. Let’s just say that Ethel and I are optimists! Stay warm and have a Happy New Year!
