I hope that you all are safe and warm. Just as Ray and all of the other forecasters said, we’re having a “snow event” with lots of driving snow and high winds. If you have to be out, drive with extra caution…or better yet, just figure out a way to let it wait until a little later. Ethel and I are enjoying a warm fireside and are reading a couple of good books.
Last year, Ethel got me a Kindle for Christmas. What a great gift. It allows me to read the first chapter or so of a book to see if it’s something that I’d really enjoy or not. One of the best things is the dictionary. On occasion, I’ll run across a word that no matter what, I can’t decipher its meaning from the words and phrases around it. With the Kindle, you just use a cursor to highlight the word, and like magic, the definition comes up in a window at the bottom of the “page.” I’m sure there’s lots of other features that I haven’t acquainted myself with that I’ll discover…even after having it for a year. But, you know, there’s still nothing like the feel of a book in your hand. I’m not sure that a computer will ever take that place.
Right now I’m reading The Pillars of the Earth. It is a long, historical fiction work. I’m just now getting the scene of the story. Oprah says that when she got about 800 pages in, she just couldn’t put it down and didn’t want it to end. I’m not quite that far into the work, but I’m fascinated with the details that are being set forth.
Ethel and I are about to wrap up our Christmas shopping. It won’t be long until we’ll have all of the gifts wrapped and under the tree. Now we can put our heads together with Weezy and LC to see what we’re going to have for Christmas dinner.
Looking ahead this week, the Boone Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday morning. Step off is at 10 a.m. We’re hoping for good weather, so we can enjoy all of the floats and performers. I’m thinking that we’ll go to breakfast at Boone Drug. It’s a good place to eat and to pick up an extra stocking stuffer or two while we wait.
A big thank you goes out to Coach Moore and the ASU Mountaineers. While they didn’t fair to well against Villanova this weekend, we certainly appreciate the effort and excitement the rest of the season. And, we were sorry to hear about Wofford losing, too. Eric Breitenstein had 102 yards in a losing effort.
Do you remember the old Christmas shows? You know, like Red Skelton, Perry Como, and Andy Williams used to host? Well the folks over at Ensemble Stage are putting one together for this weekend. It’s called Christmas in Blowing Rock 2, A Yuletide Variety Show. Performances will be Friday and Saturday, December 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, December 19 at 3:30 p.m. Well, didn’t we get a cool surprise this weekend. Ethel and I are hoping to go. It’ll be a great family night out, and we so enjoy live theater.
Christmas in the Valle continues this weekend. Santa Claus will be at the Little Red Schoolhouse on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and on Sunday from Noon until 3 p.m. They will also have Kids’ Craft Make-&-Take on Saturday from 11 a.m until 1 p.m. at the Schoolhouse. Please bring a toboggan or mittens for a donation to Share the Warmth.
Be careful driving in the snow. Remember to allow for more following distance and to slow down just a bit.
With all of the snow, I’m betting that there are some snowmen (or people) being built. Send us a picture!
Happy Birthday to Mary Katherine Mast on December 16, to Mary Hazel Mast on December 17, to Freddie Siegmund, Lauren Smith, Philip Dean, and Elisabeth Freeman on December 19, to Bradley Barber on December 21, and to Kenneth Reece on December 22. My best wishes to all of you for fine celebrations and lots of fun!

Here’s a great quote about snow. When snow falls, nature listens. ?Antoinette van Kleeff. Stay warm and have a wonderful week!
