William Mangum is one of the most popular and respected artists in the country. Twenty-four years ago, a chance meeting with a homeless individual changed Bill’s life forever and provided the genesis for the Honor Card Program.  Now in its 24^th year, Bill had utilized his artistic talent to create contemplative paintings that share a subtle message about homelessness.

With many of our neighbors being unemployed or underemployed and winter on the horizon, there’s even more need to share the warmth and help others to fend off the cold. The Mast General Store is hosting its seventh annual Share the Warmth coat, sweater and blanket collection campaign from now until November 30th.

Only ten minutes before his arrival on Monday, October 17th, Mast General Store associates in Boone were told that the President of the United States would be “stopping by to pick up some candy.” What seemed like moments later, a quiet and sunny fall afternoon on King Street transformed into a Presidential parade of police cars, SUVS, and two large buses.

Native Tennessean Dr. Lin Stepp was looking for a satisfying modern read in gift shops around the Smokies and discovered the offerings were all painted against the backdrop of the 1800s. Stepp said, “I wanted a contemporary book set in the Smokies, maybe a little romance, some mystery.” She saw the necessity for a more current genre in storytelling and decided to meet the need herself.
